A boat carrying a football team and their fans capsized on Lake Albert in Uganda, drowning an estimated 30 passengers. The overcrowded boat with 45 aboard had capsized after too many passengers – many of them understood to be drunk – moved to one side, destabilizing it.
The traveling party was from Buliisa on its way to a Christmas Day football match in Hoima District and in a party atmosphere.
Tragedy struck after the boat sunk, however, with rescue operations taking place by authorities afterwards and assisted by local fishermen.
The latest incident is fairly typical of those on Lake Albert as well as other water bodies around Africa, with vessels in poor state and often overloaded.
