20 people have been confirmed dead in the ugly accident that occur early hour of yesterday with many others injured along Epinmi-Isua Akoko Road, Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State on Tuesday.
An eyewitness told newsmen on the site that a 14-seater commercial bus heading towards Lagos had a head-on collision with an unregistered vehicle heading towards Abuja.
According to the eyewitness, “the accident occurred when the driver of the unregistered Tokunbo Range Rover Jeep, driven by a Military officer, overtook some vehicles along the Epinmi Road and rammed into the oncoming commercial bus.
“Two vehicles caught fire immediately after the collision, while most of the passengers in the commercial vehicle were trapped in the inferno.”
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, from Ikare Akoko unit, rushed to the scene and evacuated the corpses to Ikare-Akoko Specialist hospital mortuary.
The spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident.
Joseph said the accident occurred as a result of reckless driving by the drivers.
He said: “It was a sad incident.
“Fifteen people initially died in the fire.
“They were burnt beyond recognition.
“Five others died on the way to a hospital.
“We can also confirm that the accident occurred as a result of reckless driving.”
