ADC Leadership Crisis Deepens as Rival Factions Battle for Control

A fresh power struggle has erupted within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as a group of state chairmen—claiming representation from 25 states—announced a takeover of the party’s leadership following the removal of key figures, including David Mark, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Backed by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, the group declared itself the legitimate National Executive Committee (NEC) and unveiled Kogi State Chairman Kingsley Ogga as head of a new caretaker committee. They insist INEC’s action validates their authority and the removal of the Mark-led leadership.

However, the camp loyal to David Mark has rejected the move, alleging political interference and accusing external forces, including elements of the ruling APC, of fueling the crisis. Party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi also dismissed the group as “disgruntled” actors being manipulated to destabilise the ADC.

INEC had earlier removed several ADC leaders from its records, citing a court order to maintain the status quo pending a final ruling. This decision has intensified an already long-running leadership dispute dating back to 2022, when disagreements over former chairman Ralph Nwosu’s tenure triggered internal divisions and legal battles.

The crisis has now splintered the party into three rival factions: the David Mark-led bloc, the Nafiu Gombe group, and the newly घोषित NEC-backed faction under Ogga. Each claims legitimacy, deepening uncertainty about the party’s future.

At the heart of the conflict are constitutional disputes, contested leadership transitions, and accusations of illegitimate appointments. While the Ogga-led faction insists it is restoring order and legality, opposing groups argue the move is unlawful and politically motivated.

With multiple court cases, competing claims, and preparations for upcoming congresses, the ADC faces growing instability—raising concerns about its readiness for the 2027 general elections.
